A real task gives the conversation somewhere to go
The learner opens the notebook and points to what has worked before. The educator listens, asks where the difficulty begins and looks at the work beside them.
Together they choose one task that can be attempted, observed and completed. The journey is no longer about everything the learner might one day know. It begins with the next piece of work that matters.
The task changes hands
At first, the educator remains close. The learner watches, tries, asks and tries again. Each repetition transfers another part of the task from explanation into judgement and action.
-
Practice together
The educator demonstrates the difficult parts, then works beside the learner while the learner performs them.
-
The educator steps back
Prompts become fewer. Hands withdraw. The learner must notice, decide and correct the work without being carried through it.
-
The learner shows the work
The learner completes the defined task and explains the important decisions while the educator observes.
The educator steps back. The learner continues.
That is when guided practice becomes independent performance. The task is still the same, but responsibility for the next decision now rests with the learner.
Independent performance begins when support ends.
The record states only what happened
Not every learning journey ends at the same level. The record must distinguish participation from completion, demonstrated competence from verified practice.
-
Participation
The learner took part in the defined learning activity.
-
Completion
The learner completed the defined learning activity and its required work.
-
Demonstrated competence
The learner performed the defined task to the stated criteria under observation.
-
Verified practice
The learner's practice met the applicable verification requirements beyond a single unsupported claim.
A demonstration may support a governed demonstrated-competence record. It is not automatically accepted proof. Formal qualifications remain the responsibility of the authorised institution.
The next person does not have to guess
The next educator, centre or authorised institution can see where the learner began and what was actually completed, demonstrated or verified.
That record does not decide admission, employment or qualification. It gives the next conversation a truthful place to begin.
